The Blue Paradox

2023
Plastic is a Paradox. It is a revolutionary material that is essential to our modern way of life, but it is killing our planet’s most vital resource and ecosystem – our oceans.

Produced by the Radical Studio team in partnership with Ogilvy & Mather Chicago, The Blue Paradox is an immersive experience that seeks to move, engage, inspire action, and spark conversation. With deeper knowledge and broader connection on the issue, The Blue Paradox is a step towards safeguarding our future, together.

Over a two-year engagement as a Junior Designer, I played an ongoing and hands-on role in shaping this immersive experience from early concept through final execution. Working within the small, highly collaborative team at Radical Media, I contributed to the project’s visual and experiential language across spatial and digital experiences.

Is the impact of plastic pollution felt evenly at the Global scale?

This installation brings light to the unequal distribution of the impact of the plastic pollution cycle. Through a collaboration with National Geographic photographers, we were able to curate a series of images that show the behind-the-scenes labor that goes into the recycling industry and the impact it has on the people living in these global recycling hubs.

Although these images weren’t initially prepped for large scale printing, we were able to scale them up through extensive retouching and strategic display choices.
When it comes to plastic pollution, what is the tipping point?

Revolving conveyors of common products illustrate the overwhelming volume of plastic dumped into our oceans with real object statistic diagrams about recycling practices – showing the complicated relationship between consumption and disposal.

I helped define the visual language of this installation through custom illustrations, typography, and the creation of production-ready files.

Can we alone address the issues of plastic pollution?

The final chapter of The Blue Paradox focuses on the power of both individual and collective action. Through a combination of experiences, we wrap up the exhibit by creating different points of entry into the problem, ranging from the global to the local to the personal scale.

In this chapter, I took the lead in defining the experience narrative through the concepting of different engagement points, storyboarding of video content, and design of several touchpoints (both physical and digital)
